Environmental Lien Check
If a boat causes damage to any environmentally protected area, an environmental lien could be placed on the boat. Environmental liens can result in the seizure of the boat and fines in excess of $100,000. When a vessel causes damage to protected natural resources, such as seagrasses, coral reefs, sponges, and other marine environments, fines are issued to the vessel by state and federal agencies. It is not unusual for these fines to be in excess of $100,000. For example, in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary a grounded vessel can be charged up to $100,000 per day.
